Fashion Complex

Now that we’re out of the noughties and in to the…teenies? The tensies? I even heard “dixies” flying around somewhere. I digress – but now that we’re nearing the end of the first year of the decade, I wonder if we’ll ever be able to conjure up some form of fashion forwardness again. Yes, designers, artists and the like create or wear fresh styles for us to ogle – or to cry over not being able to afford. However, it feels as though every "in" look is a reproduction of an earlier decade...30s. 40s. 60s. 80s. take your pick. We've gone through the century to the point were we can’t even fixate ourselves on one decade at a time anymore.

Some of our favourite stars rock these looks with enough style and grace to make us enviable on our best of days. Nonetheless, it does make one wonder if we have any direction left, or if we’re bound to an eternity of life in the hamster wheel of fashion. It’s going fast, but it’s not going anywhere new. Or is it?

I suppose there are the Gagas of the world or artists like Janelle Monae who bring us forward a little with their futurism, or their Cyborg affiliations in the case of the latter. Even still, the wingtips on Monae’s feet bring us back to the 50s again. The past is present! Not to mention, we can't all go Gaga. Maybe I’m wrong, and to be fair, what else could the future hold for style? Bubblewrap clothing? Maybe not, but I’m no trendsetter. Still, I’ll be on the lookout for any evidence of a sustainable style that this decade can claim as it’s own.
